The Story Behind Doc’s Cabin
Dr. Millard ‘Doc’ Smith built Doc’s Cabin as a nature retreat and hunting base in 1975.
Doc, a radiologist, chose Cody to open his medical practice in 1956 because he had a
love for the Rocky Mountains, a love developed while roaming the Sangre de Cristo
Mountains near Raton, New Mexico where he grew up. Doc was both a medical doctor
and a cattle rancher. In 1962, he bought the Sanzenbacher Ranch near the mouth of
Whit Creek to summer his livestock. When he sold the ranch in the mid-1970s, he
retained a 10-acre parcel at the top of the property for a mountain retreat. He spent
many weekend hours sitting on the porch where he could gaze up at Table Mountain
while reading a magazine and drinking a beer. Today, the cabin is owned by Doc’s
descendants who want to share this special place with those who seek a true rustic
experience, off the beaten track.
