The Story Behind Doc’s Cabin
Dr. Millard ‘Doc’ Smith built Doc’s Cabin as a mountain retreat and hunting base in 1975. Doc, raised in Raton, New Mexico, opened his medical practice in Cody in 1956 because of his love for the Rocky Mountains, a love cultivated while roaming the Sangre de Cristo Mountains as a boy. Doc was both a medical doctor and a cattle rancher. In 1962, he bought the Sanzenbacher Ranch near the mouth of Whit Creek to summer his livestock. When he sold the property in the mid-1970s, he retained
this 10-acre parcel for a mountain retreat.
He spent many weekends at the cabin, often sitting on the porch with its view of Table Mountain, reading a book, or cooking meals on the wood-burning stove. Today, the cabin is owned by Doc’s descendants who want to share this special place with those who seek a true rustic experience, off the beaten track.
